The study (Katsantonis & Symonds, 2023) highlights that children exposed to what experts describe as "hostile" parenting at the age of three are 1.5 times more likely to experience 'high risk' mental health symptoms by the age of nine. Harsh disciplinary tactics, such as regular shouting, routine physical punishment, isolating children during misbehavior, damaging their self-esteem, or unpredictable punishments based on the parent's mood, can have lasting effects. However, it's important to remember that setting clear boundaries for our children's behavior is still essential.
